Based on my conversations with the recruiters from companies in the defense sector
Security clearance is necessary for many job positions available in this sector. To attain a minimal clearance a person has to be at least a permanent resident of the US. Moreover you should be sponsored to get your security clearance.
Though most positions require permanent residency or citizenship, there are positions that are open to other candidates. Many a time, such positions would be related to support, human resource and other verticals that do not deal with sensitive data.
From an CS engineer point of view or for any discipline for that matter, to know more and grow in an organization, you need the flexibility to explore various options available to you and grab opportunities that would add to your credibility. Such positions require responsibilities. Your lack of security clearance or residency status would stand in your way to get to responsible positions, and indirectly your growth.
The words from the recruiter " Though we have positions open for non - US citizens, they would would be mostly support oriented. Your options for moving around is very limited because of your clearance status. You need to be a permanent resident to procure a security clearance and we will not sponsor you for that.
This has been the case for long. But with the number of open positions and the talent pool available to us, there might me a relaxation in the selection procedure. May be 10 years from now or even more "
- Donot get your hopes high. Donot lose it too.
Anyway, do look through the available positions and if you think the position suits you well and you can stick to it for some time, you should give it a shot.
My opinion is that it is not one of the best possible places to grow or to start your career.
If you are wondering as to what companies I am talking about, they are companies like Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin.. They do awesome stuff :)
